Siriano shares the runway with 14 DC designers, resulting 30,000.00 raised

26 Oct

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On October 21, Pink Jams! hosted “Pink rocks the runway” to raise awareness and funds to help women under 40 beat breast cancer.

Atrium in Ronald Reagan Building was filled with colorful lights, dressed up crowd and live music by “Charm City Devils”. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were all around to heat up the anticipation.

Fourteen young survivors “strut their stuff” on the runway, rocking pink outfits specifically made for this event by DC local designers. After each model in pink owned it, “Pink tie guy” took the shift diluting femininity with masculinity.  Finally, so anxiously awaited Christian Siriano‘s collection hit the runway. Fourth season “Project runway” winner Siriano brought to his hometown his whole Spring-Summer 2012 collection (over 30 outfits!). He wowed the crowd with polished corals and lime greens, as well as ruffled neutrals. His lavished, never restrained or modest looks are now recognizable and loved throughout the country.

As a conclusion of the event, Pink Jams!’ President Christa Floresca, flanked by Siriano and Doughty, presented a check for 30 thousand dollars to former First Lady of Washington, DC, Michelle Cross Fenty, for the Capital Breast Care Center.

Guests completed themselves with generously filled swags and lanced to official afterparty  at Hard Rock Cafe.

Pink Jams! intrigued everybody by promising not less exciting program for 2012, and there is no reason not to believe them!

EmPower Ball to empower and support – Tigerlily

01 Jul

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

For the third time, The Tigerlily Foundation had its annual Gala – EmPower Ball – to raise funds and awareness to fight and prevent breast cancer. Every year, breast cancer gets younger and stronger, and therefore, The Tigerlily has more and more work. Fortunately, the organization has more followers and supporters, too. The same ballroom in Willard Intercontinental Hotel they had last year for Gala was packed from doors to the stage. Educating, advocating, empowering and supporting young women affected by breast cancer is the essential objective of the organization.

After the foyer reception with cocktails and tempting silent auction items, guests streamed into the ballroom, where Mistress of Ceremony, Natasha Barrett, welcomed everybody, and Rabbi Bonny gave a blessing and even performed a song!

Special guest, singer and harpist Rashida Jolley, “touched the strings” of everybody’s hearts with her marvelous performance (see the fragment of it in a video provided).

Maimah Karmo, Founder and President of Tigerlily, highlighted once again the importance of  early prognosis of the disease. Surprisingly, still, in XXI century, women have to fight to get their mammograms taken, even though there are cases of breast cancer known in women at the age of 25 and even younger. “Be your own advocate” is the mantra we all should repeat to ourselves.

Daughters of breast cancer survivors – Noelle Karmo (8), Molly Kaufman (13) and Kimberly O’Neil (38) shared their experiences in speeches on stage, what brought first tears of the evening…

This year, three awards have been presented. Jennifer Griffin, FOX News correspondent, received The Transformation Award (presented by Surae Chinn of W*USA 9). KM Warrior Award (named after Kristen Martinez, who passed away due to BC last June) was presented by Angela Kegler to loving husband and son of Michelle Bynum – who passed the torch earlier this year. Moving and genuinely heartfelt speech of 6 years old Reid had everybody in tears (and laughter at the same time). Inspire Award went to Doctor Michael Schultz, Director of the Breast Center Cancer Institute at St.Joseph Medical Center (presend by Tony Perkins of FOX 5 Morning News). One more title and recognition was awarded to Tigerlily 2011-2012 Ambassador of the year, who raised the most money – Jewel Green – she even got crowned!

Tigerlily offers education, help and support to young women before, during and after breast cancer. Distributing brochures to raise awareness, paying bills, providing meals etc. to those who are sick and feel alone and helpless – just to name a very few of what they do. The organization is founded and contented of women – BC survivors, so they know better than anyone, what’s needed to be helped through the fight. For more information about the organization, as well as how you can help, please visit their website HERE.

This year Gala was produced by The Posh Planner.

Portrait of Georgia in National Portrait Gallery

27 May

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

National Portrait Gallery housed , as it seemed, about thousand people on Tuesday night, May 24, for Portrait of Georgia gathering. The event was to celebrate 20th Anniversary of the restoration of Georgian Independence. All guests were personally greeted at the entrance by Georgia Ambassaador Temuri Yakobashvili and his wife Yana Fremer. 24 years old opera singer Sophie Nizharadze performed both Georgian and American anthems, as well as “Happy Birthday” song to Congressman Doug Lamborn.

All guests could “discover Georgia” through its classic and contemporary art, photography, dance, music, and, of course, wine and food. Georgians are well renowned for their hospitality and generosity. Four original Georgian chefs prepared a fiest, and a river of special Georgian mineral water “Borjomi” and wine would not end. Georgia is the oldest wine making region in the world. According to a legend, on the day God was allocating parts of the world to the people of the Earth, the Georgians were feasting. As a result, they arrived late and were told by God that all of the land had already been distributed. When the Georgians replied that they were late only because they had been lifting their glasses in praise of Him, God was pleased. In return, He gave the Georgians that part of Earth that He had been reserving for Himself.

There is a phenomenon called the Georgian syndrome.

Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili kept guests ecstatic during whole time of their fantastic performances.

Batik art by Nino Khoperia was on sale, and special 3D  exhibit by Gia Kereselidze was presented to complete the Portrait Of Georgia.

Enjoy the pictures and some video.

Every kid’s a rock star rocked The Ritz

05 Mar

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On Sunday night, February 27, Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner was lit and noisy with 2011 “Every kid’s a rock star” fundraiser. This event benefited Inova Fairfax Hospital for children. More than 300 families, donors, physicians and Inova team members attended this family- and kid- friendly event.

This unique event in the finest location featured live entertainment by nationally recognized “A+ Dropouts” and DJ Jamie Biden. Kids could enjoy numerous interactive games and activities, such as Mega Make-it Mix (to mix your own songs), Dimmer the Robot (the one with “smart” hands), Immersitron technology, Guitar Hero, and DJ Hero.

Along fashionably but contemporary dressed people there were fairy-tale dressed ladies – Miss Virginia 2010 Caitlin Uze and Miss American sweetheart 2011 Megan Lawless. Kids flanked them both and wouldn’t let go, it is like drem come true – to play ball with “real princesses”! Washington Wizards girls were also huge attraction but for older kids and adults, photos with them were taken throwout the evening consistently.

The amount of food reminded of Thanksgiving feast, and beautifully decorated tables only added to that feeling. Silent auction table (enormous size oval) was not unattended ever, no wonder, there were so many desired items from sponsors for a bargain price! Photobooth seemed to be tremendous hit – there was never-ending line, and, given the faces leaving with happiest expressions, well worth waiting.

What we can’t wait – is next year to attend 2012 “Every kid’s a rock star”, to benefit Inova – Hospital only for Children.

Enjoy the photos here and don’t forget to see whole gallery.
