Fashion Fights Poverty – Dress Responsibly Gala

17 Apr

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

March ended victoriously by showing us very artful fashions on “Fashion Fights Poverty – Dress Responsibly Gala”. Strong line of fabulous designers, such as winner of “Project Runway” season 7 Seth Aaron, DC very own Laura Williams and The_Cherry_On_Top of it all Luis Valenzuela, showcased their collections and wowed the crowd. Many months non-stop preparation and production team work obviously paid off and oohs and aahs and applauds of the spectators were always there to confirm that.

Shows were stirred with contemporary thematic dances performed by Hae Wookie Song, Lauren Williams, Nancy Cantine, Morgan Rose, Carla Otero.

Considering that a picture is worth a thousand words, I am offering you now to save on about  hundred thousands. Please don’t forget to enjoy the whole gallery of 152.

Blanca Santander exhibiting at Peruvian Embassy

23 Jul

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On Wednesday, July 20, Peruvian Embassy’s gallery opened its doors to let art admirers enjoy the exhibit of Blanca Santander. Ms.Santander left her motherland Peru in 1996 to come to Seattle, WA. She left her successful career as an artist to establish her life in new world.

“My work is an expression of vibrant color and deeply spiritual energies. I usually work in series, developing an idea, producing a consistent body over a period of years. *** I am from the land of Incas and Mother Earth. My heritage, my values, my colors run concurrently with all my themes. The fusion of my past and present can best be expresses by my painting “Mother Earth and the New World”. My passion is my love for our Mother Earth, my faith in humanity and my belief that compassion is so important in our lives” – Blanca Santander about her work.

Santander’s work is recognized on a national level. Barnes & Noble has now for the third year in a row licensed another one of Blanca’s paintings to produce shopping totes to promote during National Hispanic Heritage Month. Coming this September the painting “Flower Girl” will be featured on merchandise at selected Barnes & Noble stores nationwide. And, in 2008, Washington DC’s National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) honored Blanca for her painting “Timepeace” at their national conference held in Albuquerque, NM. Her point of view is influence by her Peruvian culture. “I’m from the land of the Incas and Pachamama.”

The exhibit will run through August 10. Art Gallery is open  weekdays 10:00am to 5:30pm.

The Peruvian Embassy is located at 1700 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC.

Enjoy some pictures but remember it is always better to see live.

Portrait of Georgia in National Portrait Gallery

27 May

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

National Portrait Gallery housed , as it seemed, about thousand people on Tuesday night, May 24, for Portrait of Georgia gathering. The event was to celebrate 20th Anniversary of the restoration of Georgian Independence. All guests were personally greeted at the entrance by Georgia Ambassaador Temuri Yakobashvili and his wife Yana Fremer. 24 years old opera singer Sophie Nizharadze performed both Georgian and American anthems, as well as “Happy Birthday” song to Congressman Doug Lamborn.

All guests could “discover Georgia” through its classic and contemporary art, photography, dance, music, and, of course, wine and food. Georgians are well renowned for their hospitality and generosity. Four original Georgian chefs prepared a fiest, and a river of special Georgian mineral water “Borjomi” and wine would not end. Georgia is the oldest wine making region in the world. According to a legend, on the day God was allocating parts of the world to the people of the Earth, the Georgians were feasting. As a result, they arrived late and were told by God that all of the land had already been distributed. When the Georgians replied that they were late only because they had been lifting their glasses in praise of Him, God was pleased. In return, He gave the Georgians that part of Earth that He had been reserving for Himself.

There is a phenomenon called the Georgian syndrome.

Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili kept guests ecstatic during whole time of their fantastic performances.

Batik art by Nino Khoperia was on sale, and special 3D  exhibit by Gia Kereselidze was presented to complete the Portrait Of Georgia.

Enjoy the pictures and some video.

Modus Union 2011 – this year even wider and louder

06 May

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

The only thing uncooperative that evening was the weather, but who will remember! Despite the freeze and breeze (Lumber shed at “The Yards”), the atmosphere was so heated by passion, love and laughter, and all were so ecstatic…  that you might possibly light matches off the air.

This year Modus Union pleased everybody by spectacular fashion show of Marc Bouwer‘s fall collection. Gorgeous, feminine gowns, fine detailed, celebrating woman’s body, graced the runway and provoked lots of “awwws” and “aaaahs” and applauding. Famous Ted Gibson, celebrity hair stylist and star of “What not to wear”, leaded the hair team.

There were musical performances by Sheena Alexis, Gordon Sterling Trio feat, Cadice Mills, Sam James & GMB, and Reagan Richards. More warmth by laughter in the crowd was delivered by Fran Drescher – actress, philantropist and President of Cancer Shmancer movement.

Art section of event was presented by Lolly Amons, Walter Grio, Yanique Moore, Maggie O’Neill and Roger Schultz.

Modus Union 2011 was produced by “Labels for Love” and benefited Cancer Shmancer movement. Co-emceed by Boxer (morning personality on 98.7) and Kimberly Suiters (News4).

Spotted:  Mary Shmidt Amons, Catherine Ommanney, Lynda Erkiletian, Ebong Eka, Paul Wharton, Rich Amons, Lolly Amons, Maggie O’Neil, James Cornwell, Elaine Mensah, Nicole Devolites, Andrea Rinaldi, Allison Priebe Brooks, Daniel Kramer, Lindsay Kin, April Jones Firoozabadi, Maurissa Turner Potts, Deidree Bennett
