“Sugar and champagne” for 11th time – for dogs’ sake

03 Feb

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

First day of February was sweetened and showered with champagne to benefit Washington Humane Society for the 11th time in the row. About 70 restaurants and beverage professionals participated in annual charitable affair, now in Ronald Reagan Building. Every year event grows bigger and represents more vendors, and every year more dog owners come to support (and try all the yummies). It might not be the best environment for dogs to socialize, but it’s definitely the most spacious and the most doggy-crowded place that you can ever find in DC under one roof. Needless to say, besides the mingling, dogs get to try fabulous treats, too.

“Sugar and Champagne” was created 11 years ago by Ellen and Chef Todd Gray of Equinox, Watershed restaurants and Muse at the Corcoran.

Enjoy the pictures and come again next year for 12 annual! Recap of the 10th on DressHopper can be found HERE.

24th Annual Bark Ball – more bark equals more love

07 Jun

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On Saturday, June 4, Washington Hilton Ballroom filled with both two- and four-legged attendees for 24th Annual Bark Ball, benefiting Washington Humane Society. Each year, event attracts more and more animal lovers, willing to support their favorite charity – the one that protects underprivileged dogs, cats and others. Bark Ball, the largest annual event of WHS, is also the only black-tie gala in the Nation’s Capital where you can bring your dog as your date!

Along with reception, guests could roam around shopping at the silent auction, which took a lot of “floorage” and contented delightful items from donors. Furry friends (some of them also dressed up for a Ball) enjoyed Doggie Bar (courtesy of Barkley Square Gourmet Bakery and Boutique). As guests with their companions were filling up the tables in spacious Ballroom, some gorgeous ladies were sharing their remarks. Mistress of Ceremonies Allison Seymour of WTTG-TV presented her “not furry child” who was met by genuine laughter and ovations. Gala Committee Chair Beth Viola highlighted the importance of the WHS mission – giving the voice to animals who can’t speak for themselves. WHS Chief Executive Officer Lisa LaFontaine thanked everybody for continuous support through the years. Also took their spotlights on stage  Honorary Committee Co-Chairs, Honorable Ed Whitfield and Connie Harriman-Whitfield, and WHS Board Chairman Steve Bralove.

Evening continued with video presentation and Celebrity Parade, featuring dogs offered for adoption, as well as Live Auction and the most fun part – dancing! Nobody would ask “Who let the dog(s) out” as it was their official  night out!

To celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month this June, the Washington Humane Society (WHS), in collaboration with the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA) and the makers of Fresh Step® litter, is participating in a fee-waived adoption program to help find loving homes for cats. During the month of June, WHS will waive adoption fees on all cats over the age of 2 at both of its shelter locations.

WHS shelters are located at 1201 New York Ave. NE (open during the District Dept. of  Transportation New York Avenue construction project) and 7319 Georgia Ave. NW. In addition, WHS operates a low-cost, high-volume spay and neuter facility at 1001 L St. NE, in the heart of Capitol Hill. The National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center also hosts a weekly vaccine clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, WHS has an animal training facility, the Behavior and Learning Center, located at 7315 Georgia Ave. NW, offering lessons, group classes and behavioral workshops.

Heels and paws on the runway raise $520K!!!

14 Apr

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

For the fifth time annual “Fashion for paws” rocked the runway. National Building Museum seemed to be full, having about 1800 fashion and animal lovers under its roof. The_show of the year presented fund raising models and celebrities, dressed in outfits from Tyson’s Galleria’s Saks Fifth Avenue, Betsey Johnson, Nicole Miller, Karen Miller, 7 for All Mankind, Aram, Anne Fontaine, Stuart Weitzman. Syzygy Event Productions transformed the space into spring castle with cherry trees, blooming and glowing, soft white runway with real (at least very real-looking) fire hydrant, and gorgeously decorated VIP tables. Mistress of ceremonies Pamela Sorensen and host Lawrence Zarian, who specifically flew from LA for this event, made sure that spectators had a blast watching from the very beginning. Thanks to DJ Seyhan Duru the whole show was very dynamic and dance-provoking. About 70 fabulous women and men graced the runway with their four-legged friends, and got photographed and recorded by about the same quantity of photographers and videographers. Five over-the-top couture dresses by FIDM’s alumni Clay Sadler opened the show. Pieces were inspired by VitaminWater Zero – one of the sponsors of the event.

Pictures will say better than any words. Don’t forget to visit whole gallery with more than 300 images.

Chocolate paws happy hour fundraiser at CO CO SALA

16 Feb

It is International Women’s day! What, you didn’t know it? Check HERE. My favorite part: “...the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day”

So, how we celebrate it? By spoiling ourselves. We accept flowers. We go beautify ourselves. WE DO…N”T DO ANY HOUSEWORK (UGH!!!) Homework doesn’t count though. We buy ourselves something nice (and get gifts, too). And then we go celebrate our fabulousness and beauty. And femininity. What is all women’s favorite? Chocolate, of course! Chocolate equals love, and hey, there is never too much love you can get!

Come and enjoy the whole lounge kindly provided to our group by
Co Co.Sala – chat, sip, chocolatize yourself and enjoy great company. And hey, guys are invited, as well! Who else is to remind us how precious we are!

I encourage everybody to come, especially my Russian girls, there is no reason for you to miss “Mimosa day” in the States, it_is_International!!!

Those who can’t just_donate, or can’t attend other fundraisers – this is your chance to feel good about supporting a cause, and have deliciousness delivered to your belly, all for Happy_Hour_Prices.

10% of bar sales go to Washington Humane Society.

Please share with your friends!

Happy Spring you all.

10th annual “Sugar and Champagne affair”

04 Feb

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On Tuesday night ballroom of Ritz Carlton DC transformed into almost Thanksgiving feast in February! Tenth annual “Sugar and champagne affair”, hosted by Chef Todd and Ellen Kassoff Gray of Equinox, attracted hundreds of people with their furry (and not so) companions. Over 40 restaurants and gourmet food trucks presented their best creations for animal lovers – sweets, finger foods and, of course, elite sparkling nectars. “Sugar and champagne”, which started in 2001 as a small fundraiser, now became huge significant event that all the dog owners and dog “wanters” are happy to attend and support. 100% of funds collected benefit Washington Humane Society, which relies solely on donations and does tremendous amount of work. There have not only been many “wealthy” four legged friends, there were also rescued and offered for adoption ones. It is amazing how kind and forgiving dogs are to people, no matter what they have been through, they still are full of love and sparkle and trust.

Spotted: Cheff Todd and Ellen Gray of Equinox restaurant and Watershed, Lisa LaFontaine of WHS, Holly Morris of Fox5, Tommy McFly, Stef Woods, Mark Drapeau of Microsoft, Tara de Nicolas of WHS’s Fashion for paws, Nikki Schwab, Svetlana Legetic, Donna Donella, Wendy Gordon, Leslie Maggos, Dr.Alex Naini, Stephanie Williams and many-many more of DC’s animal lovers.
