Mary Amons housed a benefit for Cancer Schmancer once again

27 Jun

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

Mary Amons of Labels for Love (a.k.a. one of DC housewives) opened the doors of her private residence in McLean, Virginia, to benefit Cancer Schmancer. Numerous vendors presented their products and services to donate percentage of sales, there was silent auction as well, and of course, lots of mingling, spiced by cocktails and fingerfoods. “Pure” donations without claiming any of the goods were, of course, also accepted. The event went way past after the posted finish time, and attracted hundreds of philanthropic and artistic people from around the area.

By the way, the house, where Mary and her family spent last 17 years in, is now for sale!

Enjoy the pictures.

Dar Be Dar opens swimming season with smashing fashions

22 Jun

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

A week before first official day of summer approached, Andrea Rinaldi opened her private Potomac residence for Uber Chic Resort 2011 trunk show of Dar Be Dar. Hot swimsuits by Tala Raassi, Iranian American designer, were snatched left and right by stylish ladies, as if they were hot cakes. Well, obviously, to rock those revealing suits, you’d have to forget about cakes for a while and hit the gym! Speaking of food, the most hospitable hostess spoiled the guests with very healthy and yummy hors d’oeuvres, not to mention variable and unlimited bar! The show celebrated beginning of the summer (beach balls and chairs, cupcakes with umbrellas and multiple colorful candy around the house didn’t let to forget!), and of course,  beauty of the female body. Three gorgeous models continuously showcased variable swimsuits, spiced up by statement jewelry pieces, also presented for sale at the event. You couldn’t ask for better Thursday evening.

24th Annual Bark Ball – more bark equals more love

07 Jun

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On Saturday, June 4, Washington Hilton Ballroom filled with both two- and four-legged attendees for 24th Annual Bark Ball, benefiting Washington Humane Society. Each year, event attracts more and more animal lovers, willing to support their favorite charity – the one that protects underprivileged dogs, cats and others. Bark Ball, the largest annual event of WHS, is also the only black-tie gala in the Nation’s Capital where you can bring your dog as your date!

Along with reception, guests could roam around shopping at the silent auction, which took a lot of “floorage” and contented delightful items from donors. Furry friends (some of them also dressed up for a Ball) enjoyed Doggie Bar (courtesy of Barkley Square Gourmet Bakery and Boutique). As guests with their companions were filling up the tables in spacious Ballroom, some gorgeous ladies were sharing their remarks. Mistress of Ceremonies Allison Seymour of WTTG-TV presented her “not furry child” who was met by genuine laughter and ovations. Gala Committee Chair Beth Viola highlighted the importance of the WHS mission – giving the voice to animals who can’t speak for themselves. WHS Chief Executive Officer Lisa LaFontaine thanked everybody for continuous support through the years. Also took their spotlights on stage  Honorary Committee Co-Chairs, Honorable Ed Whitfield and Connie Harriman-Whitfield, and WHS Board Chairman Steve Bralove.

Evening continued with video presentation and Celebrity Parade, featuring dogs offered for adoption, as well as Live Auction and the most fun part – dancing! Nobody would ask “Who let the dog(s) out” as it was their official  night out!

To celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month this June, the Washington Humane Society (WHS), in collaboration with the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA) and the makers of Fresh Step® litter, is participating in a fee-waived adoption program to help find loving homes for cats. During the month of June, WHS will waive adoption fees on all cats over the age of 2 at both of its shelter locations.

WHS shelters are located at 1201 New York Ave. NE (open during the District Dept. of  Transportation New York Avenue construction project) and 7319 Georgia Ave. NW. In addition, WHS operates a low-cost, high-volume spay and neuter facility at 1001 L St. NE, in the heart of Capitol Hill. The National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center also hosts a weekly vaccine clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, WHS has an animal training facility, the Behavior and Learning Center, located at 7315 Georgia Ave. NW, offering lessons, group classes and behavioral workshops.

Sport for Social Change Awards

03 Jun

by Yulia Mikhalchuk

On the first day of June, French Embassy housed few hundred people to benefit the use of sport as a development tool for homeless youth and young adults. Presented by Street Soccer USA and HELP USA, 2011 Sport for Social Change Awards recognized:

Troy Vincent (Leadership in Sport Award)

Will Garofalo (Youth Service Award)

Mark Ein (Philanthropy through Sport Award)

Lisa Wrightsman (Salamander Award for Women’s Impact)

Honorable Douglas Palmer, Mayor of Trenton, NJ, presented the first award for Troy Vincent.  He “broke the ice” by making sparkling jokes, how he was younger, had more hair and also was white not_so_long_time_ago. All the speakers highlighted the importance of support of people around, and they would never be able to be where they are, if not this support.

“They go through fire, they come out alive and they do regenerate” -  Sheila Johnson about Ladies Salamander. Lisa Wrightsman, the last but not least awardee, is definite representation of Lady Salamander. Being drug addict in the past, having spent time in jail, she truly revived and now is an inspiration to others. In her most heartfelt speech, she described her experience as a miracle which she could not believe at first, and now she is on her way to even higher achievements.

Enjoy the pictures and little piece of the video.

To show their support, all participating men in the March will be wearing high heels – they will truly be walking in the shoes of domestic abuse victims.
*** Women can show support by sponsoring a male friend, father, son and Men will also be able to have the option of walking in different types of shoes.
